Historic Elmwood Inn property for sale

In order to accommodate our expanding wholesale businesses, Elmwood Inn Fine Teas has closed the famous tea room and moved the company offices to the wholesale production facility. We are offering for sale the historic Elmwood Inn. The brick mansion, built in 1842 by merchant John Burton, is suitable for uses such as a bed and breakfast, restaurant, or as a private home. The property is now the residence of the owners of Elmwood Inn Fine Teas.

Elmwood Inn c.1842

The mansion features four bedrooms, three full baths, two half baths, 30-ft kitchen with walk-in pantry, library, dining room, parlor, 30-ft den w/wet bar, laundry, brick patio, zoned HVAC, 10.5 ft. ceilings, and hardwood floors. There are five fireplaces, three with gas logs.

Appliances include two new dishwashers, stacked ovens, new gas range with oven, refrigerator, freezer, trash compactor, instant hotwater dispenser, new washer and new dryer. A state-of-the-art hybrid high-efficiency heating and cooling system was installed in October 2009.

Elmwood was built as a home for merchant John Burton in 1842. His general store, now preserved by the City of Perryville and the Perryville Battlefield Preservation Association, still stands 100 yards away. The mansion served as a Elmwood Academy from 1896-1924.

In 1973, the prominent house became Elmwood Inn, a regional restaurant that served fine Kentucky cuisine until 1989. The current owners, Bruce and Shelley Richardson, restored Elmwood in 1990 as a bed and breakfast with tea rooms seating 46 people.

The building has 5000 square feet on two levels. It is zoned "commercial" and includes 3/4-acre land with formal gardens and parking.

Elmwood Inn is noted as:

  • A National Historic Registry Property
  • A Designated Kentucky Landmark
  • A field hospital during the 1862 Battle of Perryville.
