Elmwood ladies on the lawnThe stately home that would one day be called Elmwood was built by Perryville merchant John Burton in 1842. The mansion sat on an estate consisting of over 250 acres, including an icehouse, smokehouse, service kitchen, and other structures. The massive limestone foundation blocks were hewn from a local quarry and thousands of clay bricks were made onsite. The exceptional early Kentucky woodwork found in the window casings, floors, baseboards, staircase and mantels was crafted from virgin Kentucky forests.

John and Eusebia Burton raised five children in this home. Their general store still stands 100 yards away, just across the Chaplin River. It operated continuously until the 1970s. Alabama troops camped here in the days leading up to the 1862 Battle of Perryville as the Burtons fled their home for the safety of nearby Danville. Following the October 8, 1862 battle, the home served as a major surgery center for several weeks.

Elmwood Academy Perryville Kentucky 1896The Greek Revival house was purchased by Dr. Thomas Poynter and his sister in 1896. Natives of Shelbyville, they named the former Burton House Elmwood Academy. The boarding school had a reputation as one of Kentucky's finest private schools from 1896 until 1924. The school closed that year with the death of Professor Poynter. His niece, Blanche Griffing, continued to live in the house another 30 years.

Elmwood was restored by preservationists in 1977 and operated as one of Kentucky's best-known regional Ronald Reagan on the Elmwood Patiorestaurants, Elmwood Inn, until 1989. Famous guests included Ronald Reagan, Col Harland Sanders (KFC), and Lynn Redgrave. It served as the backdrop for over 500 weddings and receptions during those years.

The grand home was restored again in 1990 by Bruce & Shelley Richardson. It became a bed and breakfast with tearooms seating 46 people, along with art galleries and retail shops. The British Tea Council named it as the first North American recipient of the prestigious list of Best Tea Places in 2002. Elmwood Inn Tearoom operated until 2004.

As the Richardson's tea enterprises outgrew the Perryville location, the tearoom closed in 2006 and the wholesale operations were later moved to Danville. Elmwood was restored to its original condition as a private residence, now home to the Richardson family.

The handsome brick building with exceptional original woodwork has nearly 5000 square feet on two levels. The property is commercially zoned and includes 3/4-acre of land with formal gardens and ample parking in the center of Perryville.   Download floor plan
