Chocolate Valentine Cake

If your favorite friend is a chocolate lover, then this cake is the way to his/her heart. What an indulgence - chocolate cake with chocolate glaze, topped with leaves of chocolate.

Cake ingredients:

1/3 cup shortening

1 cup sugar

1 egg, room temperature

1-1/2 cups flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup unsweetened Dutch processed cocoa

1 cup buttermilk

1 teaspoon vanilla

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and line with wax paper an 8" or 9" heart-shaped cake pan.

Cream shortening and sugar. Add egg. Sift dry ingredients and add alternately with buttermilk. Stir until just mixed Add vanilla. Pour batter into pan and bake 30 minutes. Cool on a rack. Frost.

Frosting ingredients

4 one-ounce semi-sweet chocolate squares

1 ounce unsweetened chocolate square

1/2 cup sugar

1/4 cup light corn syrup

1/4 cup cream

4 teaspoons unsalted butter

1 teaspoon vanilla

Directions:

Over slow heat, melt both chocolates. Add sugar and corn syrup while stirring vigorously. Add cream and cook until smooth and satiny. Add butter slowly. Stir in vanilla.

Place the cake on a rack and cover with the warm chocolate glaze. Decorate with live rose buds or chocolate leaves.
